Pre-natal Chiropractic Care

Pre-natal Chiropractic Care “At Chiro-Health Chiropractic Care Center, we believe that an essential part of experiencing a better pregnancy is by using safe, gentle chiropractic care,” said Dr. Cindy Munson, Chiro-Health Chiropractic Care Center.

Chiropractic care is defined as the art, science and philosophy of caring for the human frame while maximizing its neurological components. It’s a popular, drug-free approach to reducing pain and dysfunction while optimizing the potential for wellness and vitality. “Introducing chiropractic care during pregnancy helps women during this exciting time. Mom-to-be gain many advantages,” said Dr. Munson.

The advantages include: ● A greater sense of well-being ● An optimal internal environment for the developing your little one ● Decreased need for pain medications and interventions during labor ● Increased energy ● Easier, faster labor and delivery ● Less constipation and heartburn ● Relaxed muscles ● Relief from sciatica, back and neck pain

Chiropractic evaluation and treatment during pregnancy is a safe and effective means of treating common musculoskeletal symptoms that affect pregnant patients. In fact, doctors who were surveyed reported a high rate of success (82%) among their patients in relieving the musculoskeletal causes of intrauterine constraint using the Webster Technique. Although the sample size was small, the results suggest that it may be beneficial to perform the Webster Technique, particularly during the eighth month of pregnancy, when breech presentation is unlikely to spontaneously convert to cephalic presentation and when external cephalic version is not an effective technique.

The Webster Technique Many obstetric studies have shown that the correct positioning of the baby in-utero affects the birth outcome. Proper positioning also decreases the potential for undue stress on the baby’s developing spine and nervous system. “Recent research demonstrates that specific chiropractic approaches, such as the Webster Technique, help the pelvic floor to relax, enabling an easier exit for the baby through the birth canal. A symmetric pelvis is a happy pelvis.” said Dr. Munson. The Webster Technique involves a specific analysis of the pelvis, with emphasis on the positioning of the sacrum and sacroiliac joints during pregnancy. When successful, the Webster Technique avoids the costs and/or risks of external cephalic version, cesarean section, or vaginal breech. “Given these findings, the Webster Technique deserves serious consideration in the health care management of expectant mothers exhibiting not only adverse fetal presentation but as a preventative screening and regular checks throughout pregnancy.” A recent study found that more than 75 percent of pregnant women experience pregnancy-related low back pain, pelvic pain, or a combination; and that this pain increases as pregnancy progresses. Chiropractic care is a safe, effective, and drug-free way to manage these biomechanical changes and other musculoskeletal symptoms during pregnancy.

Chiropractic spinal and pelvic adjustments can reduce, resolve and manage pregnancy discomforts such as back pain, hip pain, sciatica, and heartburn.

Chiropractic care and patient education as part of a comprehensive prenatal care team has been shown to hold greater benefit for pregnant patients than traditional obstetric care alone. “Educating our patients as a part of their care plan helps inform and empower them to better understand what is happening inside their bodies, and gives them the information they need to communicate better with their prenatal providers during their pregnancy, birth and postpartum,” said Dr. Munson. Dr. Munson is certified in performing the Webster Technique. She also uses techniques such as Thompson, Diversified and Logan Basic. Dr. Cindy has extensive post graduate education focusing on pregnancy, pediatric and family care. She recently celebrated 25 years of being a Doctor of Chiropractic. “I absolutely love working with families beginning with preconception care, through pregnancy, labor and delivery, post-partum care and then through raising their little ones. Growing healthy children into healthy adults is my mission. Instilling healthy habits - nutrition, sleep habits, mindset, exercise and a fully functioning nervous system is key. Now I take care of children of the kids I began my practice with. It is very rewarding and fulfilling to see the next generation of families making healthy choices and living to their potential.”
